Day 5 – First Workdays and a Slice of Routine in NYC

Day 5 marked the beginning of a new rhythm for many of us as we started settling into our work placements here in New York. After a few days of exploring and adjusting to the fast-paced energy of the city, it was exciting to get a glimpse of what our day-to-day life might start to look like.
The day started with Abinayan, Lara, and Gabriel heading off to their first day at their startup. The company they’re working for has a pretty fascinating mission: making investing in Broadway shows more accessible. They kicked things off with a few introductory meetings, getting to know the team, the company’s vision, and the projects they’ll be diving into. It was a lot to take in, but they all seemed excited about the challenge, and let’s be honest, working in a space that bridges finance and Broadway sounds like a uniquely New York experience.
Meanwhile, Soraya had her first day at the Swiss Consulate. She met her new team and got introduced to her main responsibilities, which will focus on marketing and filming for an upcoming marathon event. It’s a pretty dynamic role, and from what we’ve heard, she’s already full of ideas and looking forward to bringing her creativity into the mix.
Matias, Alissa, and Laurence haven’t started their internships just yet, they begin tomorrow, so they spent the morning shopping with our supervisor Philip. A little wardrobe upgrade was in order before the professional life kicks in, and they each managed to grab some great pieces to feel more prepared for their first day.
At 14:00, we all regrouped and headed over to visit the offices of Greater Zurich Area, the company where Laurence will be working. We were welcomed with an informative introduction that gave us all a better idea of what the company does,promoting Switzerland as a top destination for international businesses. It was interesting to hear how their work connects Zurich to the rest of the world, and Laurence left feeling excited to get started there.
In the evening, we decided to keep things simple and relaxed. We grabbed dinner at Liberty Bagels, which definitely lived up to the hype. New York really knows how to do bagels, and trying one from a classic spot like this felt like another little bucket list moment for those who hadn’t tried it yet.
Afterwards, we all headed back home. We just hung out in the apartment, played card games, and wound down together. Slowly, one by one, people started heading off to bed, tired but content.

It wasn’t the most adventurous day, but it was one of those transitional ones that you need when a new routine starts settling in. It felt like the beginning of a new phase in our trip, less tourist, more local. And with so much still ahead, we’re just getting started.
